Understanding Stroke: Causes, Warning Signs, and Homecare Support

A stroke occurs when the blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die, which makes immediate medical attention critical.

Types of Stroke

There are two main types:

  1. Ischemic Stroke – caused by a blockage in an artery due to a blood clot or buildup of plaque.
  2. Hemorrhagic Stroke – caused by a weakened blood vessel that ruptures and bleeds into the brain.

A Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), or “mini-stroke,” is a temporary blockage that resolves quickly but serves as a warning sign for future strokes.

Common Risk Factors

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity and physical inactivity
  • Family history of stroke

Warning Signs (Remember: FAST)

Recognizing stroke symptoms early can save lives.

  • Face drooping – One side of the face may droop or feel numb.
  • Arm weakness – Sudden weakness or numbness in one arm.
  • Speech difficulty – Slurred speech or trouble understanding words.
  • Time to call 911 – Act immediately if any of these symptoms appear.
